Budget 2026 resources

This is really a placeholder. Be sure to check back, as I'll be adding more documents and activities both before and after the budget. For now, here are the two explainers which could be useful to go through before students see the budget, since it allows them to think critically about what they are hearing. Lots of schools are on holiday when the budget will be announced, so these might be useful as holiday homework. The first is on How Taxes Can Change (ie not just rate rises, but eligibility changes, relief changes, band changes etc).

The second is on How Government Spending Can Change, looking at things like total vs per capita spending and funded vs unfunded spending promises.

I will add details of podcasts and pre-reading as I find them, but in the meantime, the IFS are doing a live podcast on the 20th of October, which will look ahead to the budget. I'm always really impressed with the IFS Zooms in podcasts. They're explained in detail, but in a fairly accessible way, I would imagine that would be available by the 21st if you want to set that as a holiday listing.
