Beyond the ‘Global Irish’: what are the migration challenges facing Ireland?

Ireland is a great example of a country with a long history of emigration with a diaspora estimated at 70 million people worldwide, and successive governments built this into a deliberate asset through the Global Irish strategy. Ireland now has record inward migration alongside renewed emigration of young Irish people so it makes a really juicy case study. This article has sections on labour mobility, mental health among returning migrants, and the policy response to over 500,000 new arrivals in four years. Not directly spec-focused, it works well as extension reading for students exploring migration, labour markets, and the link between economic growth and housing supply, as well as those looking at Ireland as an in-depth case study. A good one to recommend to those who enjoy both Econ and Human Geography.  Read here
