Macroeconomic Indicators Game
This is a quick "don't say it" style game for the macroeconomic indicators. I posted the paper version several years ago, but I've now updated it with a no-prep version. The aim is to get students defining these terms accurately and concisely, rather than the woolly and vague definitions we sometimes get.
What's in it
There are 27 target words covering the macroeconomic indicators, from GDP, per capita and real vs nominal through to purchasing power parity, the current account, budget deficits and the Gini coefficient. Each target word comes with a short list of words students aren't allowed to say, forcing students to think about harder. They can't say any version of the target word either. If the word is "unemployment", then "employ", "employed" and "unemployed" are all off limits too.
Version 1: printable cards
The cards work in pairs, small groups or as a whole class. A student picks up a card and gives clues to the rest of their group, who try to guess the target word. Have a quick look through the cards first and take out any measures you haven't taught yet (there's nothing more deflating than trying to describe a word you've never heard of).
Version 2: PowerPoint
This version is ideal for a whole class with no cutting or laminating required. The screen shows the target word and the list of words to avoid. One student (the guesser) stands with their back to the screen, while the rest of their team can see it.
There's a non-economics example straight after the instructions (a crocodile), so you can run a practice round before the students have to start thinking about economics. As with the cards, it's worth checking the slides first and deleting or hiding any measures your students haven't covered yet.
Alternative use
If you want to use either as a competition, set a timer for 30 seconds, see how many target words the team gets.
