Alfred Marshall podcast

This is from Economics in Ten podcast, season three, episode two. Marshall is sometimes called the father of modern economics, and this episode makes a convincing case for the title. He drew the supply and demand diagram as students know it today (the Marshallian cross), developed the concept of price elasticity, and turned economics into a rigorous academic discipline with its own mathematical framework. His Principles of Economics was the dominant textbook for decades and set the template for every economics textbook that followed. It’s a quietly important episode for any student who wants to understand where the analytical toolkit they use every day actually came from. Very accessible, since the supply and demand content is foundational to the whole course: this works particularly well for students who want to understand why economics looks the way it does.  Listen here (via show page)
